Cellars Hohenort

Inmitten des Constantia Valleys, das nach dem Gut des ersten Gouverneurs am Kap, Simon van der Stel, benannt wurde, liegt ein weiteres Hotel von Liz McGrath. Das Cellars - Hohenort ist ein ganz besonderer Name auf der Liste der Relais & Chateaux Häuser Südafrikas. Nicht nur, weil es eines der bekanntesten Hotels Kapstadts ist, sondern auch ein Anwesen mit Geschichte, die bis zur Gründung der holländischen Kolonie am Kap zurückreicht. Auf dem früheren „Klaasenbosch Estate“, standen die ersten
Gebäude bereits vor 1700 und das heutige „Cellars“, in typisch kapholländischem Baustil errichtet, war das Heim von Hendrik van Damme, der bei der Ostindischen Companie eine Position als verantwortlicher Arzt bekleidet hat. Ergänzt wird das „Cellars“ durch das erst um 1910 im Edwardian Stil erbaute „Hohenort“, das frühere Anwesen des bekannten Kapstädter Geschäftsmannes
Arnold W. Spillhaus. Für Liz McGrath, die beide Gebäude, als sie zum Verkauf standen, erwarb, war es von vornherein klar, die Bausubstanz bei der aufwendigen Renovierung nicht anzutasten. Mit viel Sinn für das Detail und mit großem Aufwand, wurden beide Häuser in das „Cellars – Hohenort“ Hotel verwandelt , das heute fünf Sterne und das Relais & Chateaux Abzeichen trägt.
Das Ambiente der beiden Häuser wurde stilgerecht den Bauepochen angepasst. Die 53 Räume und Suiten hingegen, erhielten wiederum romantische Möblierungen und Stoffdekorationen im Landhausstil. Berühmt ist das „Cellars“, wie es kurz genannt wird, auch für seinen Garten, der rund um die beiden Häuser angelegt wurde. Die Auszeichnung, als einer der 30 schönsten Hotelgärten der Welt, spricht für sich. Und selbst Interessierte, die nicht Hotelgäste sind, erhalten Zugang. Als besonderer Höhepunkt gelten natürlich die beiden Restaurants, das „Greenhouse“ und das „Cape Malay“. Christiaan Campbell, Chefkoch des Hotels, zeichnet nicht nur für die Kreationen der Küche in Kapstadt verantwortlich, sondern dirigiert auch das Geschehen in den Restaurants der beiden anderen Hotels von Liz McGrath, dem „Plettenberg“ und dem „Marine“. Die Kreationen aller Häuser sind im „Cookbook“ verewigt, dem Kochbuch der „Collection“. Für viele der wiederkehrenden Gäste, die die Landhausatmosphäre inmitten der Großstadt schätzen, spielt die zentrale Lage des „Cellars“ eine wichtige Rolle. Alle schönen und interessanten Ziele, in und um Kapstadt, sind in weniger als 20 Minuten erreichbar, sofern man das ruhige Constantia mit seinen Einkaufszentren, Weinfarmen und Golfplätzen überhaupt für den Trubel in der City verlassen mag.

In the midst of Constantia Valley, which was named after the estate of the first governor on the Cape, Simon van der Steel, is another hotel led by Liz McGrath. Cellars-Hohenort is a very particular name on the list of Relais & Châteaux houses of South Africa. Not only for being one of the most well-known hotels in Cape Town but also for being an estate with a historical past which reaches back to the foundation of the Dutch colony on the Cape.
The first buildings on the former ‘Klaasenbosch Estate’ were erected before 1700 and today’s ‘Cellars’ , was set up in the typical Cape-Dutch architectural style. It was the home of Hendrik van Damme, who was a senior consultant (UK) at the East Indian Company. The ‘Hohenort’, which was also built as late as 1910 in the Edwardian style was the former estate of the well-known business-man Arnold W. Spillhaus of Cape Town.

Liz McGrath, who purchased both houses, knew from the start that she wouldn’t touch the structure during the costly renovation. Both houses were transformed into the Cellars-Hohenort hotel. With her deep feeling for details and with a large expenditure it is nowadays decorated with 5 stars and the Relais & Château decoration. The ambience of both houses was adopted to correspond to the style. The 53 rooms and suites, however, have romantic furnishings and material in the style of country houses.
The ‘Cellars’, as it is called for short, is also famous for its garden surrounding both houses. The honor of being one of the 30 most beautiful hotel gardens of the world speaks for itself. Even interested people who are not hotel guests have access to the garden.
The two restaurants the ‘Greenhouse’ and the ‘Cape Malay’, are regarded as exceptional. Christian Campbell, head cook of the hotel, takes responsibility not only for the creations in the kitchen in Cape Town, but also in the restaurants of the other two hotels owned by Liz McGrath, the ‘Plettenberg’ and the ‘Marine’. All creations of these houses are immortalized in the ‘Cookbook’, the cookbook of the ‘Collection’.
The central role for many returning hotel guests, who appreciate the country house atmosphere in the midst of the big city, is the central location of the ‘Cellars’.
All beautiful and interesting sights in and around Cape Town can be reached within 20 minutes, provided you want to leave the quiet Constantia with its shopping centers, vineyards and golf course to plunge into the hustle and bustle of the city.
